המעבר מגיל ההתבגרות לבגרות כולל שלב המזוהה כ”בגרות מתהווה” – חיפוש הזהות תוך התנסות באפשרויות ובתפקידים של בוגר. תקופה זו מאופיינת בחוסר יציבות ובתחושת חיפוש עצמי וגיבוש זהות. שלב חשוב זה נמנע מצעירים רבים בספקטרום האוטיסטי אשר נדרשים לעבור ישירות מגיל ההתבגרות לבגרות. עמותת “אבני דרך לחיים” באה לספק פרק הכשרה, שייתן מענה לצורך זה ויהווה חולייה מקשרת בין החינוך הפורמאלי במסגרת הבית-ספרית לבין מסגרות החיים הבוגרים.
פרק ההכשרה של עמותת “אבני דרך לחיים” מציע תהליך של ליווי עבור המשתתף ביצירת חיים בוגרים במציאות הקיימת, תוך גישור בין רצונותיו ליכולותיו. מכינת אבני דרך פועלת בחיי היומיום הסובבים את המשתתף, היא אינה מתאימה את הסביבה אליו, אלא מותאמת לסביבה. מתוך כך, אין היא באה לספק פתרונות תעסוקה, חברה ופנאי עבור משתתפיה, אלא מלמדת כיצד לצרוך את השירותים וההיצע הקיימים בכל סביבה בה יבחר הבוגר להתגורר במהלך חייו ובמציאות חייו הדינאמית והמשתנה. היתרון הוא שהמשתתף רוכש את הכלים והאפשרויות להיות שותף במעגלים חברתיים שונים ולהתנסות בהישגים וכישלונות באופן עצמאי, תוך כדי ליווי ותמיכה של מסגרת מקצועית וחברתית.
